PITTSBURGH -- Phil Kessel collected a whole lot of things when he broke in on Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and scored Thursday night at PPG Paints Arena.

Kessel not only gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 win, but he also made it two games in a row that he scored in overtime, both games ending with the same score.

On a personal level, it was Kessel's 300th goal in his 843rd NHL game.

And to top it off, it was the second game in a row he got a celebratory face wash from quirky teammate Ryan Reaves.

"He's given it to me a couple of times out there, but if we win, that's fine," Kessel said of Reaves.

Kessel got the puck on a turnover by Winnipeg's Patrik Laine at the far blue line, zoomed down the ice and tucked the puck under Hellebuyck's pads 77 seconds into overtime.

"Laine had the puck. He tried to pass to the guy across. I just deflected it and had a breakaway," said Kessel, whose thought process with all that open ice ahead of him as he raced away from Laine in pursuit was pretty simple.

"Hopefully, I score," he said. "I'm just reading and reacting. I'm just trying to get it in there."

Kessel's back-to-back overtime winners give him eight points in his past seven games.

"What's impressive about the goal (Thursday) is he was at dead stop when he picked that pass off, and he created enough separation to be able to get a really good shot off," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "He can really skate, and when he gets some ice -- and (three-on-three) overtimes tend to lend those types of opportunities -- he can be dangerous. He has certainly shown that at this part of the season."

Hellebuyck had a lot of time to watch the play develop, too, but it didn't work to his advantage.

"I almost read it too well," Hellebuyck said. "I knew he was going to go five-hole. I'm thinking I'll kick it out, but that's not goaltending. I need to just drop to my butterfly and just make the save like I've been working on all summer, just getting that quick butterfly. So I overthought it."

Kessel is the second player in Penguins history to score in overtime in consecutive games. Aleksey Morozov did in March 2004.

Kessel also is the 18th American-born player to reach 300 goals, with Minnesota's Zach Parise the only other active one.

"I've played a decent amount of games in this league. It's nice to get 300 goals," Kessel said.

Pittsburgh's Conor Sheary and Winnipeg's Josh Morrissey scored in the first period for a 1-1 tie that held until overtime, thanks to strong goaltending.

Penguins goaltender Matt Murray made 30 saves for his seventh straight win.

Hellebuyck, who stopped 34 Pittsburgh shots, had won his first four decisions this season.

Pittsburgh (7-3-1) won for the fifth time in six games. The Penguins have won 17 straight home games against the Jets.

Winnipeg (4-3-1) was coming off of a five-day layoff between games.

Pittsburgh's top line produced the first goal just 1:25 into regulation.

Sidney Crosby started the breakout with a pass to winger Jake Guentzel, who raced down the left-wing boards. At the blue line, Guentzel cut in and sent a pass between the legs of defenseman Tyler Meyers toward Sheary in the slot.

Sheary was covered by defenseman Dmitry Kulikov -- who returned from a two-game absence with an undisclosed injury -- but extended his blade for a pinpoint deflection to send the puck under Hellebuyck's pads for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

"(Guentzel) is a really good player," Sheary said. "He makes a lot of good passes. I think we read off each other pretty well. I try to get in an area where he can give it to me, and he made a great play."

Winnipeg tied it at 9:26 of the first. Bryan Little won a faceoff at the left dot back to Morrissey at the near point. Morrissey blistered a shot that went in off Murray's glove for his second goal.

"That's a top-notch goal by Pittsburgh. I loved our response," said Jets center Matt Hendricks, who made his season debut after dealing with a foot injury.

"We didn't go into panic mode and try to score on the next shift. We got back to our game plan and dug, and dug and dug. We got a great shot by (Morrissey). We're in the game. It's a 1-1 game. A great hockey game all night long."
