Tyler Bozak scored in the sixth round of the shootout, giving the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

After Bozak scored, Chris Tierney tried to extend the shootout for the Sharks, but his shot banged off the post, allowing Toronto to stop its three-game losing streak.

Auston Matthews scored in the first round of the skills competition for the Maple Leafs, and Kevin Labanc of San Jose kept the shootout going with his third-round goal.

For San Jose, Joe Thornton needed two more points to pull even with Adam Oates for 17th on the all-time list at 1,420, but he did not notch any in the contest.

Toronto's Patrick Marleau opposed his former team for the second time this year. The 38-year old played with the Sharks for 19 seasons, ending with last year. He did not register a point Thursday.

The game started off with a bang when Thornton and Toronto's Nazem Kadri lined up for the opening faceoff and then dropped the gloves for a fight just two seconds in.

Kadri even managed to pull out a piece of Thornton's beard as they wrestled to the ice.

Matthews gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead with 1:23 left in the first period, deflecting a Connor Carrick shot past San Jose goalie Martin Jones.

The Sharks answered 31 seconds later when Brenden Dillon came in on the left side and beat goalie Frederik Andersen with a shot from the edge of the circle.

For Dillon, a defenseman, it was his first goal this season in game No. 37.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead when Kadri redirected a Mitchell Marner shot into the net on a power play with 7:20 remaining in the second period. The lead lasted a bit longer this time before San Jose tied it late in the period.

Andersen fumbled away a puck that came right to him after a faceoff at center ice. It went directly to Tierney, who scored on an unassisted goal with 1:42 left in the middle period.

Andersen finished with 33 saves, and Jones stopped 26 shots.
